Put your personality into your living room

Jo Hamilton

At the moment my style is to make sure living areas are comfortable and relaxed. Clean, minimalist schemes may suit some but I think the effect can sometimes be cold and unwelcoming. I prefer a living room to be textured and toned to feel homely and reflect the personality of the home’s owner.

Modular corner sofa’s continue to prove popular and are a great way to maximise space. Go large, comfy and with soft fabrics to create an enticing and relaxing seating area.

Building up geometric prints in layers brings a room to life, and the colours and patterns you choose can be a reflection of you too.

Books can be seen as clutter, but I think this is a mistake. They give character and soften lines, making the space real and lived in. And chosen wisely, can convey a little insight into your personality.

Pale wood finishes such as greys and washed out whites are also a favourite of mine at the moment, giving a soft, modern edge. And keeping your furniture lighter enables you to play with darker paint tones to create stronger features of your wood surrounds, skirting and windows that reflect your bolder personality traits.

So don’t be afraid to make your living room speak you. It’s a space that should not be sterile and conform, it’s a space that should reflect you and welcome people in to relax, not just in a home, but in your home!
